Home | “By grinding [the green split peas] up into a fine powder and then mixing the powder with boiling hot, spiced milk, it’s cooked instantly!” |
Microwave ovens not only cook foods quickly, but are extremely efficient. This is because almost 100% of the energy consumed goes into heating the food, rather than into heating the cooking utensil, the surrounding air, the surface of a cook stove, etc. Therefore, microwave ovens are very environmentally friendly (“green”).
After years of experimentation, I’ve come up with a revolutionary recipe for delicious pea soup, a recipe which takes less than 10 minutes to prepare! Why do I call it “revolutionary?” Because it takes time savings/energy efficiency to a whole new level. Think of how much time it takes to cook green split peas in the conventional way. This is because it takes a long time for the heat to penetrate to the center of what are basically “heat insulators.” By grinding them up into a fine powder and then mixing the powder with boiling hot, spiced milk, it’s cooked instantly! Think about how much energy could be saved if everyone were to do it this way!
By the way, I’m 68 years old and I’ve been doing my cooking using microwave ovens exclusively for about 7 years now. (The kitchen stove in my apartment is not even plugged in, and is used only for storage and for additional countertop space.) During that time, I haven’t gotten sick even once, and my annual Veterans Administration physical exams have always given me a clean bill of health. (Knock on wood.)
1. Put a 6 cup microwavable bowl on top of your large kitchen scale.
2. Zero the scale.
3. Add 16 ounces of milk. (½ cup of powdered milk dissolved in 14 ounces of water could be substituted.)
4. Add a super heaping teaspoon of Howie’s Best Popcorn Spice.*
5. Using a wire whisk, mix thoroughly.
6. Zero the scale.
7. Add 4 ounces (1 cup dry measure) of American style cheese broken into small pieces or ½ stick of butter broken or cut into small pieces.
8. Bring the mixture to a vigorous boil in your microwave oven (If your microwave oven is rated at 1000 watts, like mine is, then this should take between 5 and 6½ minutes.)
9. While the preparation is being microwaved, add a heaping ¼ cup of green split peas to your spice grinder.
10. Grind until all the little “ticks” stop, which means that the split peas have been ground into a fine powder.
11. When the liquid is through being microwaved, add the green split pea powder a little at a time while carefully stirring with a wire whisk in such a way that no lumps develop.
12. Serve immediately because lumps may develop if the soup is reheated.
* Howie’s Best Popcorn Spice consists of a mixture of the following 12 powdered ingredients: 2 parts compounded asafoetida (optional), 2 parts basil, 1 part black pepper, 1 part cayenne pepper, 3 parts celery salt (I paid US$6.49 for 32 ounces at Econo Foods™), 1 part chili pepper, 6 parts coriander, 4 parts cumin, 2 parts fenugreek (optional), 4 parts ginger, 3 parts popcorn (extra fine) salt (I paid US$4.99 for 17 ounces at Econo Foods), and 4 parts turmeric. (Asafoetida and fenugreek are available from East Indian grocery stores.)
