How-to: Move Your DVD Player to within Easy Reach

Like most people, when I installed my current home theater system 5 ½ years ago, I put the DVD player next to the TV. Recently, however, I realized that there’s got to be a better way. The remote control allows me to control a single DVD, music CD or MP3 CD, but for changing the DVD/CD, it’s useless.

The solution to this problem was to move the DVD player within easy reach. This means that I can swap DVDs/CDs without having to get up and walk to the TV. If you watch TV from a sofa or easy chair, then put the DVD player on an “end table.” If you watch TV from your bed, then put the DVD player on a bedside table. This idea is especially useful for those who are bed-ridden!

Of course, you will need to purchase audio and video cables that are long enough to reach from your DVD player to your TV and/or receiver. In my case, 15 feet was long enough. I needed three phono connections for the component video and one phono connection for the digital audio. To save money, I used two 12' stereo audio cables. The result was that the audio worked perfectly (most of the time), and the video quality was exactly the same as it was when I used the 4' component video (red/green/blue) cable which came with the DVD player! After some time, however, I noticed that the digital audio would be interrupted momentarily whenever something turned off or on. Therefore, I replaced the analog audio cable with an expensive 20' (6 meter) digital audio cable.
