Any of the following true of you?

1. No time to eat in restaurants.

2. Not much time to cook.

3. No time to wash dishes.

4. No time to eat more than once or twice a day.

5. Not much time for grocery shopping.

If so, then this recipe may be for you!

Don’t let the large number of steps fool you. This recipe is very quick and easy to prepare, and uses only commonly available ingredients. It uses two microwavable, disposable paper bowls¹, four rubber bands, and a disposable plastic spoon¹ as the only cooking / eating utensils. It does not require any perishable ingredients such as fresh vegetables or dairy products (Butter will keep for months in the freezer, and Kraft® Velveeta™ cheese doesn’t require refrigeration until it is opened.), so you only need to stock up on groceries once every few weeks! It is a complete meal in itself with plenty of protein.

Using two paper bowls¹ and four rubber bands, you can make a disposable “pressure cooker” for your microwave. The purpose of a pressure cooker is to speed up cooking time, save energy, prevent the ingredients from drying out, and allow the butter to melt, even if it’s frozen.

When we think of “cold cereal,” we might think of cold milk, sugar, and perhaps some fruit on top. This recipe also uses cold cereal, but instead of being a sweet preparation, it is a nutritious hot vegetable preparation! It contains both a grain (cereal) and a legume (peas), so it includes a complete form of protein.

1. Place two 20-oz. microwavable, disposable paper bowls¹ side-by-side.

2. Partially open a can of sweet peas in such a way that only the liquid comes out.

3. Alternately pour a small amount of the liquid into the two bowls until each bowl contains an equal amount of liquid and all of the liquid has been drained out of the can.

4. Open the can the rest of the way and add ½ of the peas to one of the bowls.

5. Pour the liquid from the other bowl back into the can, cover the can, and refrigerate until next time.

6. Fill the empty bowl ⅔ full with “cold cereal” such as puffed rice, toasted oats, wheat flakes, or corn flakes².

7. Dump the liquid and the peas on top of the cereal, getting the cereal as wet as possible.

8. Set the empty first bowl aside for step #13 below.

9. Put 2 tablespoons (¼ stick) of butter in the center of the bowl on top of the peas. (The butter may be room temperature, refrigerated, or even frozen.)

10. Add some salt.

11. Add some black pepper.

12. Add a small amount of other spices such as chili pepper, basil, oregano, powdered ginger, and/or asafoetida (found in East Indian grocery stores).

13. Place the empty paper bowl upside down on top of the full one.

14. Secure the two bowls together using four equally spaced rubber bands. (The tighter the better.)

15. Microwave on high for 3 minutes.

16. After removing the assembly from the microwave, remove the rubber bands and save them for next time.

17. Save the top paper bowl for next time.

18. Mix, using a disposable plastic spoon¹.

19. Using the plastic spoon, carefully move the mixture of peas and cereal from the center to the edge until a cavity reaching to the bottom of the bowl is created in the center of the bowl. (This is done because if the tomato puree and/or the cheese touch the edge of the bowl while they are being microwaved, they tend to climb up the side.)

20. Fill the cavity with tomato puree.

21. Using your fingers, break off chunks from a solid block of American style cheese, such as Kraft® Velveeta, putting a goodly number of chunks toward the center of the bowl.

22. Microwave on high for an additional 2 minutes. (It’s okay to leave the plastic spoon in the bowl.)

23. Mix, before the cheese has a chance to cool off.

24. Serve while still warm including the plastic spoon.

¹ At Wal-Mart®, I’ve purchased Dixie® brand 20-oz. microwavable paper bowls in packages of 30 for US$3.38 and Diamond® brand plastic spoons in packages of 48 for US$1.14.

² The “cold cereal,” in addition to soaking up the excess liquid, provides a complete protein, which grains or peas/beans (legumes) by themselves do not provide. A “hot cereal” such as ⅓ cup of instant oatmeal, a package of Nabisco “Instant Cream of Wheat Original” or a package of instant grits (available at Super Wal-Mart®) could be substituted.
