Don’t let the simplicity of this recipe fool you. It is incredibly delicious. It uses two microwavable, disposable paper bowls1, four rubber bands, and a disposable plastic spoon1 as the only cooking / eating utensils. It is a complete meal in itself and it is very filling. None of the non-optional ingredients are perishable (Butter will keep for months in the freezer), so grocery shopping is minimized.

Using two paper bowls1 and four rubber bands, you can make a disposable “pressure cooker” for your microwave. The purpose of a pressure cooker is to speed up cooking time, save energy, and so the ingredients don’t dry out.

1. Add enough water to a 20-oz. microwavable, disposable paper bowl1 to cover the bottom.

2. Fill the bowl with frozen cut broccoli3. (They will shrink as they are cooked.)

3. Place a second 20-oz. disposable paper bowl upside down on top of the first.

4. Secure the two bowls together using four equally spaced rubber bands.

5. Microwave on high for 6 minutes.

6. While the broccoli is cooking, melt 3 tablespoons (⅜ stick) of butter2.

7. After removing the assembly from the microwave, remove the rubber bands and save them for next time.

8. Save the top paper bowl for use as the bottom paper bowl next time.

9. Add ½ cup (⅓ of a 12 oz. can) of evaporated milk.

10. Add ⅓ cup of instant oatmeal.

11. Add a heaping disposable plastic spoonful1 of mango relish4.

12. Mix using the plastic spoon.

13. Microwave on high for 1½ minutes. (It's okay to leave the plastic spoon in the bowl while microwaving.)

14. Add the melted butter.

15. Mix.

16. Serve while still warm.

17. Save the used paper bowl and the used plastic spoon for use in preparing / serving / eating desert. (optional)

1 At Wal-Mart®, I’ve purchased Dixie® brand 20-oz. microwavable paper bowls in packages of 30 for US$3.38 and Diamond® brand plastic spoons in packages of 48 for US$1.14.

2 For a good way to melt the butter, see “The World’s Best Popcorn” (http://LLBest.com/WorldsBestPopcorn.htm).

3 A good substitute for the frozen cut broccoli is frozen mixed vegetables in which case the microwave time in step 5 may be decreased from 6 minutes to 4 minutes.

4 Available at East Indian grocery stores.
