This ear cleaning method works best if it’s as quiet as possible. Therefore, try to do it at a time when most people are sleeping.
1. Purchase an “Ear Wax Removal System” from Wal-Mart®, and make sure that it comes with a little blue bulb, variously referred to as an “irrigator” or as a “soft rubber bulb ear syringe.” Since every brand contains the same active ingredient (6.5% carbamide peroxide), purchase the brand that’s the least expensive, as long as it’s not “Auro® Ear Drops.” I paid US$4.84 for E•R•O®.
2. After tilting your head so that your ear is down, flush your ear with the little blue bulb using warm water. Use at least 3 “bulbfuls” of water.
3. Dry the inside of your ear with a finger covered with a towel so as to get as much water out of your ear as possible.
4. Lie on your side with your ear up. (I do this as a routine thing on the top bench of a very hot sauna. The heat of the sauna helps to melt the ear wax.)
5. Put a few drops of the ear cleaning solution into your ear. (It works better if the solution is warm. E•R•O comes with a hole that is exactly the right size for precise dispensing of the solution. Auro must have it’s tip cut off, like a tube of caulking compound, so it’s very easy to cut off too much, which results in a hole that’s too big.)
6. You should hear the ear cleaning solution bubbling against your ear drum. (Auro doesn’t bubble.) If you don’t, then it means that you were overdue for an ear cleaning!
7. Let the solution work, softening the ear wax, for several minutes.
8. Repeat step #2.
9. Repeat step #3.
10 If you didn’t hear bubbles against your eardrum in step #6, then repeat steps 4 through 9 until you do, but first dry your ear using a towel covered finger. This is so that the cleaning solution will be diluted as little as possible. (For me it usually doesn’t take more than 2 or 3 iterations: Evidence that my sauna method works fairly well!)
11 Repeat steps 4 through 10 for the other ear.
