Green Recipe: Microwave Fresh Vegetables Using Very Little Energy

This recipe, according to the “P3 International P4400 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor” (US$24.98), requires 0.20 kilowatt-hours of electricity to prepare. This is only about 2 cents worth of electricity!


In order to prepare this recipe, you will need the “Double Layer Glass Microwave Cooker”¹ (http://LLBest.com/EnergyEfficientCooking.htm).

(Makes 1 to 2 servings)

1. Fill the 4 cup glass bowl ⅔ full of bite sized pieces of some combination of fresh broccoli, fresh cauliflower and/or fresh red cabbage.

2. Add ½ cup* of water.

3. Add ½ teaspoon of salt.

4. Add ½ teaspoon of chili pepper powder.

5. Add ½ teaspoon of ground basil.

6. Add 1 teaspoon of curry powder.

7. Add between 2 tablespoons (¼ stick) and 4 tablespoons (½ stick) of butter.

8. Place the lid on the bowl, the bowl inside the 7 cup glass bowl, and the lid on that bowl also.

9. Microwave on high until the mixture comes to a vigorous boil.

10. Place the 2 pieces of glass pie bakeware on top, up-side-down.

11. Microwave at 1/10 power* for 40 minutes*.

12. To absorb the liquid, mix in ¼ cup of instant mashed potato flakes.

13. Serve while still warm².
