Any of the following true of you?

1. No time to eat in restaurants.

2. Not much time to cook.

3. No time to wash dishes.

If so, then this recipe may be for you!

Basmati rice, also known as “popcorn rice,” is the world’s most flavorful and nutritious. “Normal” white rice is bleached brown rice. The bleaching process takes away some of the nutrients. Basmati rice, on the other hand, is naturally white, and therefore needs no bleaching.

Using two paper bowls¹ and four rubber bands, you can make a disposable “pressure cooker” for your microwave. The purpose of a pressure cooker is to speed up cooking time, save energy, prevent the ingredients from drying out, and allow the butter to melt, even if it’s frozen.

1. Put ½ cup of basmati rice² into a 20-oz. microwavable, disposable paper bowl¹.

2. Wash rice two or three times.

3. Add 1 cup of water.

4. Add ½ teaspoon of salt.

5. Add ¼ cup (½ stick) of butter. (Frozen is OK.)

6. Place a 2nd 20-oz. disposable paper bowl upside down on top of the 1st.

7. Secure the two bowls together using four equally spaced rubber bands. (The tighter the better.)

8. Microwave on high for 2½ minutes³, 3 minutes³ if the butter is frozen.

9. Microwave on ½ power³ for 8 minutes³.

10. Allow rice to sit, inside the microwave with no power, for 5 minutes.

11. After removing the assembly from the microwave, remove the rubber bands and save them for next time.

12. Save the top paper bowl for next time.

13. Serve while still warm including a disposable plastic spoon¹.

¹ At Wal-Mart®, I’ve purchased Dixie® brand 20-oz. microwavable paper bowls in packages of 30 for US$3.38 and Diamond® brand plastic spoons in packages of 48 for US$1.14.

² Any white rice could be substituted as long as the instructions say “Combine 1 cup rice and 2 cups water in a 2 quart saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer (slow boil) and cover tightly. Simmer 15 minutes. Turn off heat. Let stand covered for 5 minutes.” or something similar.

³ Times and power level may vary, depending upon your particular microwave. Some experimentation may be necessary.
