Here is a desert that contains the types of ingredients that might be contained in a candy bar, but it is much more delicious and nutritious than any candy bar.
1. To a 20-oz. foam bowl1, add powdered milk until the powder covers the entire bottom of the bowl to an average depth of ½". (Use a disposable plastic spoon1 to measure the depth.)
2. Add a small amount of maple syrup2.
3. Mix.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until all of the powdered milk is wet with maple syrup to a batter-like consistency.
5. Thoroughly mix in approximately 1 tablespoon (⅛ of a stick) of butter3.
6. Add some shredded coconut (optional).
7. Fill the remainder of the bowl with some dried fruit4 and/or nuts4 (optional).
8. Mix in some dry ready-to-eat cereal (optional).
9. Microwave on high for 30 seconds. (Optional, but highly recommended during cold weather. If you do intend to microwave the mixture, then use a microwavable paper bowl5 instead of the foam bowl in step 1 above.) (It’s okay to leave the plastic spoon in the bowl while microwaving.)
10. Mix.
11. Microwave for another 30 seconds and mix again. (Optional)
12. Serve including the disposable plastic spoon.
1 At Wal-Mart®, I’ve purchased Hefty® brand 20-oz. disposable foam bowls in packages of 30 for US$2.62 and Diamond® brand disposable plastic spoons in packages of 48 for US$1.14.
2 Maple syrup jars always include the message, “Refrigerate after opening,” but you might be able to safely get away with not refrigerating it on short trips. Otherwise, a cooler containing ice is in order. If you don’t have any maple syrup, then mix ¼ cup of white or brown sugar with the powdered milk in step 1, and substitute water for maple syrup in steps 2 and 4.
3 For a good method for dispensing butter while traveling, see “Fresh Butter on the Road” (http://LLBest.com/ButterOnTheRoad.htm). A good substitute for the butter is peanut butter, or, better yet, peanut butter and strawberry jam. For peanut butter and strawberry jam combined that doesn’t require refrigeration after opening, you could use Smucker’s® Goober® Strawberry.
4 For a good source of a dried fruit/nut mix, see “Dried Fruit and Nut Treasure Hunt” (http://LLBest.com/NuttyTreasureHunt.htm).
5 I’ve purchased Dixie® brand 20-oz. microwavable paper bowls in packages of 30 for US$3.38 at Wal-Mart.
