| Home | “This system would greatly reduce many of the conflicts which arise within typical communal living projects.” |
The following are five of the problems of typical communal living projects:
1. Members “not pulling their load.”
2. Members “consuming more than their share.”
3. Members “making a mess” in common areas.
4. Members causing damage to communal property.
5. Members breaking the rules of the commune.
The idea is for a “pay-as-you-go” communal living facility:
1. Each member of the commune has a scanable plastic card which can be put on a key chain or put on a longer chain and worn around his or her neck.
2. Each card is associated with a computerized account which keeps track of debits and credits.
3. Each member can use his or her card to purchase meals, use laundry equipment, etc.
4. Each member can use his or her card to “punch in” and “punch out” when performing services to the entire commune such as cooking or cleaning.
5. Members who “make a mess” in common areas or destroy communal property could have their account debited according to how much it cost to repair the damage.
6. Members who break the rules of the commune could receive punishments dictated by a “jury of their peers” according to pre-agreed upon written guidelines.
