Last winter, I was asked to purchase a vacuum cleaner for use in the million dollar mansion belonging to a friend. Determined to get him a good one, I stopped by the local public library to see what Consumer Reports magazine had to say about the subject. The July, 1999 issue contained a report which was exactly what I was looking for.
Although I grew up with canister type vacuum cleaners in the house, the CR article said that uprights outsell canisters by seven to one, and it gave some very good reasons for this, so that’s the type which I decided to purchase for my friend.
The only upright that was rated “Excellent” for both bare floors and carpets was one called the Hoover “WindTunnel Self Propelled Ultra” (Model U6425-900) and since my friend had a lot of both kinds of floors, this is the one that I decided to buy. K-Mart had them in stock, but they also had a model that was not self propelled for a lot less money, so I decided to settle for the cheaper one. I used that vacuum cleaner to clean my friends house a few times, and was very much impressed which how powerful it was, and how well it worked.
Having just moved into my own little cottage recently, I began searching for a vacuum cleaner for myself. In the mean time, I borrowed my mother’s old dependable Electrolux, but compared to the Hoover that I’d used last winter, it seemed like a toy.
I ended up buying a Hoover “WindTunnel Bagless” (Model U5750-900), which was on sale at K-Mart for US$279.99.
I’m sure that the Hoover Corporation makes plenty of money on their vacuum cleaner bags. I noticed that K-Mart sells 3 bags for US$7.95, which seems kind of high to me. Now, because of competition from Dirt Devil, etc., the Hoover Corporation has been forced to produce a bagless model: one which also allows you to see the dirt as it’s being picked up. I guess the Hoover company execs figure that people will be willing to pay a little extra for their patented “WindTunnel Technology,” which they claim “Picks up more dirt than any other clean-air upright…period!”
I assume that the “clean-air” part of that claim refers to the fact that it has “HEPA Allergen Filtration,” which Hoover claims filters out 100% of dust mites and 100% of ragweed pollen.
I was amazed at the incredible amount of dirt that the Hoover picked up that the Electrolux had left behind. After using the Electrolux, I had an allergic reaction (sneezing and runny nose) to something in the air. After using the Hoover just one time, I no longer have any such problems.
In short, I highly recommend this vacuum cleaner. Your time is valuable, so why waste it using a vacuum cleaner which is not picking up the maximum amount of dust and dirt, and which is not leaving the air as allergen free as possible.
The following is not the main reason why I bought this particular make and model, but now that I’ve used it a number of times, I realize that it should have been. Because of the clear plastic dirt chamber, this particular model is actually FUN TO USE! It’s fun to see how much dirt you are picking up, especially when vacuuming a carpet, when the dirt is largely “invisible.” In fact, because this machine is actually fun to use, I’m constantly looking for an excuse to use it!
