If your main reason for using an automatic dishwasher is to save time and trouble, then you’re barking up the wrong tree!

AN IDEAL CASE FOR THE USE OF AN AUTOMATIC DISHWASHER

I’ve only met one person whose use of an automatic dishwasher results in a perfectly organized kitchen. She is in her 80’s and is legally blind, but she ran the most well organized household that I’ve ever seen. Except for hers, every homemaker that I’ve seen who uses an automatic dishwasher has a kitchen which is more or less chaotic.

1. Does she ever use the dishwasher in economy mode?

No.

2. Does she care whether or not the dishwasher is full or not before she turns it on?

No.

3. Does she put dishes with food stuck to them in her dishwasher?

No.

4. Does she leave dirty dishes in her dishwasher overnight?

No.

5. Does she use dishwashing detergent in her dishwasher?

No.

If, for you, the answer to any of the above questions is “Yes,” then maybe you shouldn’t be using an automatic dishwasher!

The main two reasons for using an automatic dishwasher are as follows:

1. To get the dirty dishes out of sight so that your kitchen always looks neat and clean.

2. To get the dishes very clean and free from harmful bacteria.

Most people, however, are not achieving these two goals to the fullest extent possible, and for them, an automatic dishwasher might be doing more harm than good.

If your main reason for using an automatic dishwasher is to save time and trouble, then you’re barking up the wrong tree!

PROBLEMS USING AN AUTOMATIC DISHWASHER

1. If you are so poor that you must use your dishwasher in “economy” mode, then you are not getting the full benefit. One of the main advantages of using an automatic dishwasher is that you can rinse your dishes in water that is much too hot to touch, so that harmful bacteria are killed. It’s a law that restaurants must rinse their dishes in water which is at least 180° Fahrenheit. This is very hot!

2. If you are so poor that you must wait until the dish washer is filled before you use it, there is always going to be the problem of no one wanting to put all of the clean dishes away because there are so many, and the concomitant problem of not knowing for sure whether or not the dishes in the dishwasher are dirty.

3. If you put dishes in the dishwasher with food stuck to them and allow the food to dry on them, then there is a good chance that some of the food will still be stuck to them after the dishwashing cycle has completed.

THE SOLUTION

1. Always wash each item by hand before putting it in the dishwasher, so that no food is stuck to it.

2. Always start your dishwasher just before you go to bed at night, irregardless of how full or empty it is.

3. Never use “economy” mode.

4. Never use dishwashing detergent. In other words, use your dishwasher to sterilize the dishes, not to clean them.

5. Always put all of the dishes away first thing in the morning.

ADVANTAGES OF THE ABOVE SYSTEM

1. Everyone will always know whether or not the dishes in the dishwasher are “dirty” because unless it’s the middle of the night, they are always dirty.

2. Dirty dishes are always out of sight, so the kitchen always looks neat and clean.

3. The clean dishes which have been put away in the cabinets are as clean and free from harmful bacteria as possible.

4. You will save time and trouble by not having to use any dishwashing detergent.

5. Since there will not be very many dishes in the dishwasher after the wash cycle is complete, it will not be very much trouble to put them away, and therefore a very serious “mental block” will have been removed.

My opinion is, “If you are too poor, too miserly, or too lazy to follow the five rules listed under ‘THE SOLUTION’ above, then maybe you shouldn’t be using an automatic dishwasher!”
