Note: This tutorial assumes that extensions for known file types are not hidden. (1. Click Start. 2. Click Computer. 3. Click Organize. 4. Click Folder and search options…. 5. Click the View tab. 6. Make sure that Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked. 7. Click OK. 8. Close the Computer window.)
Suppose that you are installing or setting up a number of identical computers for a customer or client, and you want to install windows in exactly the same way with exactly the same applications on each computer. To install everything the way they were designed to be installed, over and over again, is extremely tedious and time consuming.
Perform the following steps on only one of the computers:
1. Install Windows and all of the application software and make sure everything is working exactly the way that you want it to.
2. Copy a program from the Windows installation CD-ROM (D:\ADMIN\APPTOOLS\LFNBACK\LFNBK.EXE) to the root directory of the computer’s hard drive (drive C:).
3. Download a program called “PKZIP.EXE Version 2.50” and a program called “PKUNZIP.EXE Version 2.50” (ftp://ftp.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/arcers/

4. Create a file in the drive C: root directory called “Lfn-rstr.bat” which contains the following line:

6. Double click the “Lfn-bkup.bat” icon. This will temporarily eliminate all long file names from the computer’s hard drive.
7. Exit Windows to the DOS prompt.
8. At the C:\> prompt, type “pkzip -rp -whs backup.zip *.*.” This will cause all of the files on the hard drive, including all of the hidden and system files, to be compressed and added to a file called “backup.zip.”
9. Restart Windows by typing “exit” or “win.”
10. Double click “My Computer.”
11. Double click “(C:).”
12. Double click the “Lfn-rstr.bat” icon to restore the long file names.
13. Create a file in the root directory of drive C: called “Restore.bat” containing the following three lines:
14. Download a program called “Volkov Commander 4” ( http://www.egner-online.de/vc/en/frameset.htm?/vc/en/downloads.htm).
15. Using an external CD-ROM writer, install the CD-ROM creation software, and create a CD-ROM containing “Backup.zip,” “Restore.bat,” “Pkunzip.exe” (http://www.brewguys.com/pkzip.htm), and the four files which begin with “Vc.” of “Volkov Commander 4.” (A Zip drive or other external storage media which can be accessed under DOS could also be used.)
16. Uninstall the CD-ROM creation software.
17. Delete “C:\Backup.zip,” “C:\Restore.bat,” “C:\Pkzip.exe” “C:\Pkunzip.exe,” and “Volkov Commander 4.”
1. Boot up the computer using a “Windows Startup disk,” which allows access to the computer’s CD-ROM drive.
2. Format the computer’s hard drive by typing:
3. Make sure that the computer is able to boot up off of it’s hard drive.
4. Reboot from the starup diskette.
5. Put the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
6. Type:
…and use Volkov Commander 4 to delete all of the files on drive C:, including COMMAND.COM and all of the hidden and system files.
7. Exit Volkov Commander and type:
8. Boot up from the computer’s hard drive.
9. Double click “My Computer.”
10. Double click “(C:).”
11. Double click the “Lfn-rstr.bat” icon. to restore the long file names.
